The Fly River Turtle

Carettochelys insculpta

The pig-nosed turtle (Carettochelys insculpta) is the sole surviving member of the family Carettochelyidae — a living relic with no close relatives among freshwater turtles. Native to the remote river systems of southern New Guinea and northern Australia, it inhabits fast-flowing rivers, lagoons, and coastal estuaries.

Unlike any other freshwater turtle, it possesses true flippers rather than webbed feet, giving it an almost marine quality in the water. Its distinctive fleshy, pig-like snout functions as a snorkel, allowing it to breathe at the surface with minimal disturbance. Adults can reach 70 cm in length and live for several decades in the right conditions.

Highly sought after by specialist collectors worldwide, the pig-nosed turtle demands expert husbandry, a large heated aquatic environment, and a varied diet of aquatic plants, fruits, and invertebrates. Planet Arowana sources only legally obtained, captive-bred or sustainably sourced specimens through our trusted international network.
